Referrals accepted
Referrals are welcomed from general practitioners, emergency physicians, orthopaedic and plastic surgery colleagues, rheumatologists and hand therapists.
- Nerve compression — carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel and less common neuropathies
- Tendon conditions — trigger digits, De Quervain’s, tendinopathy
- Hand and wrist trauma, acute and late-presenting
- Nerve injury requiring repair, grafting or transfer
- Dupuytren’s disease
- Arthritis of the hand, thumb base and wrist
- Failed or complicated previous surgery
- Shoulder, elbow and general orthopaedic problems

The following should be discussed directly, on 01065772773:
- Amputation of a digit or part of the hand
- A hand or digit that is cold, pale or devascularised
- Loss of active movement following a laceration, suggesting tendon division
- Suspected compartment syndrome
- High-pressure injection injury, however small the wound appears
- Spreading infection with systemic features
Information
What helps a referral
- Mechanism and timing of injury, where relevant
- Findings on examination — particularly sensation and active movement
- Imaging already performed, and where it can be accessed
- Hand dominance, occupation and functional demands
- Relevant comorbidity, especially diabetes and smoking history
- Previous surgery to the same limb
Afterwards
Shared care
Patients are returned to the referring physician with a clear account of the findings, what was done, and what follow-up is required. Where hand therapy is needed, the rehabilitation protocol is specified rather than left open.
Where a problem falls outside this practice, it is referred on to an appropriate colleague rather than managed at the edge of competence.
